The 50′s – Golden Age of Childhood

custom_1237938688448_gilbertatomicopentrimmed

Did you get to play with radioactive material when you where a kid?  No?  I bet you didn’t even get to use real scissors until you graduated from highschool. Well, in an bygone era filled with cold-war ferver, you could have experienced such wonders.  Behold: the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab!  This was apparently a government ploy to con youngsters into prospecting for uranium, and farm the next generation of nuclear masterminds.

“This was the most elaborate Atomic Energy educational set ever produced, but it was only only available from 1951 to 1952. Its relatively high price for the time ($50.00) and its sophistication were the explanation Gilbert gave for the set’s short lifespan. Today, it is so highly prized by collectors that a complete set can go for more than 100 times the original price.
The set came with four types of uranium ore, a beta-alpha source (Pb-210), a pure beta source (Ru-106), a gamma source (Zn-65?), a spinthariscope, a cloud chamber with its own short-lived alpha source (Po-210), an electroscope, a geiger counter, a manual, a comic book (Dagwood Splits the Atom) and a government manual “Prospecting for Uranium.”

And to think, I had to wait until I was 8 just to get a lousy pocket-knife! Where do I sign up?

Reese’s Peanut Butter Topping – Cue Angles

angels3

Ok, so a while back, I wrote about the Bacon Cheese Roll and I may have insinuated that, baring negative health effects, we would all prefer to eat bacon (and cheese) for every meal.  Of course this in not true, It’s absurd to think we would eat so much bacon without polishing it off with a little Reese’s Peanut Butter Topping.  I’m not sure where this wonder goop has been all my life.  Last week I had a chocolate shake with some of this sweet business mixed in.  It was quiet to be sure, but i swear I heard a chorus of angles sing!  Let thy arteries clog!

Overcome your fear of farting!

dysfunctional-chair_5

An ancient proverb states: “Let not thy wind pass silently”.  Wise words to live by my friends.  For too long we have been ashamed of the natural beauty of flatulence. We try to hold them in, squeeze them out quietly, or muffle the sound in a couch cushion.  No longer! Thanks to my new hero Alice Wang, who not only farts with pride, but with so much pride that she wants everyone in the vicinity to know she farted.  How you might ask?  By making a chair with a built in microphone and speaker, thats how!  This marvel of engineering (ironiclly name the “Silent Farter”) will capture every nuance of your emittance, and broadcast it for the whole room to enjoy.  I look forward to the day were we can all fart with our heads held high.

Speed of the Puma… Modified Power Wheels

Check out these modified Power Wheels and then go make me one.  I had a Power Wheels jeep growing up and I guess you could  call it modified. It was made out of a microwave box, with wheels colored on it.  The engine was sweet though – my little brother! Good times.

Isn’t He Adorable?

pet-at-at-18283-1236633974-24

Forget the dog, I’ll see if the kids would go for one of these lovable creatures. Other than destroying a rebel base here and there, I hear they are really quite gentle. Can some one point me to the nearest AT-AT breeder?  See the full gallery here.

You’ll Never See It Coming…

Meet iCub, the cute little robot that will charm it’s way into you life, then murder you in your sleep. Get the full story here (of course they leave out the part about an army of these things taking over the world – typical).

Food of the Gods

bacon-and-cheese-roll

I’m pretty sure that this is what we will eat in heaven.  Think about it – the only reason we don’t eat bacon-cheese rolls everyday, at every meal is for health reasons.  So, logic would have it, since we will already be dead, there will be no need to refrain.  I can’t wait to die.  Get the full recipe and step-by-step instructions here.

I loves me some junk-bots

hydroflame1Well, as the title of this blog implies, i love robots (or does it imply that I’m afraid of being murdered by robots?). I came across Lockwasher Design a few months ago, and was amazed by the cleaver little creations. I love the concept of taking the random old part and creating something new. And i can’t think of anything cooler than a robot made of junk. Recently there was a whole slew of awesomeness featured on Dark Roasted Blend that will blow your circuits (ha ha, get it – circuits, robots – PUNNED!).

Also check out Bennett Robot Works if you can handle any more glorious metal.
